Sustainable development
Banking and ABI's commitment to sustainability
The commitment of the banking world and ABI to sustainability is developed through:
- dialogue with the institutions, to foster the establishment of a framework, including regulations, that is increasingly oriented towards sustainable development;
- discussion with households and businesses, to support them in their investment choices and to support them in the environmental and climate transition process, in a socially balanced way as well;
- the attention and appreciation of the people working in the bank attraverso iniziative di conciliazione vita-lavoro, di welfare, di formazione e sviluppo di competenze utili ad accompagnare la trasformazione del tessuto sociale, economico e produttivo in ottica sempre più ESG, che hanno trovato sostegno ed implementazione anche da parte della contrattazione collettiva nazionale di lavoro e nell’ambito degli accordi aziendali e di gruppo.
In particular, there are many areas in which the banks' and ABI's commitment to sustainability takes concrete form: these include environmental protection and the development of sustainable finance, accessibility and inclusion, the enhancement of diversity, the promotion of legality, the contribution to cultural growth, and the dissemination of financial and savings education.
The ABI's initiatives for sustainable development are represented in the Declaration of Commitment ("Communication on Engagement"CoE) to the Principles of the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), to which ABI has adhered since 2005.

12 June 2023Commitment to the environment and sustainable development
The commitment to environmental sustainability is embodied in the development of concrete actions times at prevention and adaptation to climate change e at respect for the environment in a broad sense (biodiversity, water resources, pollution, circular economy).
Environmental sustainability for the banks essentially concerns two aspects:
- the first concerns the organisation and internal procedures of the banks themselves and focuses on the adoption of business practices that are attentive to, for example, energy consumption and waste production
- the second refers to the activities carried out by banks and mainly concerns the adoption of credit, investment and customer savings management policies aimed at encouraging sustainable behaviour and consumption capable of having a positive impact on the environment and society.
Vademecum on sustainable finance
The 'Vademecum on Sustainable Finance' was produced by ABI with the collaboration of banks and consumer associations working within the Technical Table on Sustainability Issues. Using simple and accessible language, it aims to tackle the main aspects of sustainability in banking, providing, in the form of "questions and answers", a "toolbox" thanks to which even the citizens less experienced can:
- have a more general view of sustainability, understood as a conscious economic model;
- approach the topic of the circular economy;
- focus on the concept of sustainability for the bank.
The Vademecum also aims to raise awareness of virtuous behaviour and the consequences of choices that can affect - in a general way - society and the environment, highlighting how customers play a fundamental role in developing the demand for sustainable finance.

The tool is available both in PDF format and in a dynamic version.
