About us

The Associazione Bancaria Italiana (ABI) is a voluntary association of banks and financial intermediaries, which works to promote the culture of legality, sound and prudent banking management, knowledge and awareness of ethical and social values, of behaviour inspired by the principles of correct entrepreneurship and the realisation of a free and competitive market.

In these areas, the Association represents, safeguards and promotes the legitimate common interests of its Members, encourages the dissemination of corporate, financial and savings education and promotes initiatives for the orderly, stable and efficient growth of banking and financial enterprises, in a competitive perspective consistent with national, European Union and international regulations.

For the pursuit of its purposes the Association:

  1. It organises and encourages the organisation of studies and debates, takes care of the dissemination of knowledge and training in particular on economic, financial and legal issues, and promotes the circulation of information among its members or between them and other economic and financial bodies;
  2. urges national, EU and international regulatory innovation in matters of interest to members;
  3. defines unitary guidelines for members on labour relations and employment policies vis-à-vis workers' trade unions and other business representative organisations;
  4. within the framework of the lines referred to in c) above, for Members who grant specific mandates and pay specific contributions;
  5. urges and helps to promote the adoption of modernisation processes in public administrations to enable an increasingly efficient operation of banking and financial enterprises and a competitive environment for the national economy;
  6. carries out information, technical assistance and consultancy activities for the benefit of its members;
  7. draws up, in full compliance with the principles of free competition, codes of ethics and conduct, promotes their adoption by the Associates and cooperates in initiatives taken in this sense by other national and international bodies;
  8. collaborates with public administrations and institutions, with economic and social organisations, and with bodies and associations to resolve issues affecting the credit and financial sector, as well as problems of more general interest to Italy and the European Union;
  9. promotes - with a view to rationalising services and in full compliance with the principles of free competition - collaboration initiatives between the Members;
  10. encourages the professional development of workers, either by directly or indirectly carrying out training activities, or by collaborating in strengthening and enhancing the training activities carried out by specialised schools and/or groups of Associates;
  11. settles in conciliation any disputes between the Members and undertakes assignments for the same purpose;
  12. carries out any other activity that may be useful for the achievement of its statutory purposes.

The ABI is a member of the Federation of Banks, Insurance and Finance, the European Banking Federation and the European Mortgage Federation for the pursuit of its statutory aims.
